Book review information 2015

Submit a book review and you could win £100 in book tokens

Have you read an inspiring or moving book recently? Would you like to share your passion for literature with others and practice your critical skills at the same time?

This year we thought it would be fun to once again feature a daily book review in our Advent Calendar and so we invite you, our Advent visitors, to put pen to paper or (preferably) fingers to keyboard and write a review for consideration. Not only could you inspire others to read your chosen book, you may also help to solve a Christmas gift conundrum for them.

We will select a book review for publication each day and successful entrants will also be in the running for the overall best book review prize. The winner of the overall prize will receive a £100 National Book Token with which to purchase many more books. We will donate £10 to the chosen charitable cause* of every person who submits a book review, so you can do a good deed just by joining in!

If you are not sure whether to enter, then write a review anyway! It's amazing what comes out when you begin to express yourself. This is not a high-academic exercise so please do not feel intimidated. When thinking about what to write try to balance an equal emphasis on the content (the setting, the plot, the characters) with your response to reading it. In other words it is your encounter with the book, rather than the book itself, that makes for a good review. You can also have a look at the pdfs of the reviews for 2013 and 2014.

Your review should ideally be between 200 and 500 words and can cover any book, whether for adults or children. Please do not submit work that is not your own because we would rather not receive an angry call from Will Self or Melvyn Bragg (particularly the former, who seems quite fierce). Our panel of judges will select the overall winner at the end of Advent.

If you are ready to submit your review click on the Submission link on the right hand panel and you will be taken to a form where you can forward your text.

So please don't be put off, give it a go!

*The charitable causes we are supporting this year will be announced prior to the calendar launch in December. If you submit a review prior to this we will assign your £10 donation once you have registered on the calendar and chosen your cause from the selection provided.
